What is Fumigation

Fumigation is a method of using a lethal gas to exterminate pests within an enclosed space. This is done by enclosing the structure in a “tent” of vinyl-coated nylon tarpaulins.  After the pests are exterminated, the structure is aerated and check with a spectrometer to ensure there are no traces of the gas left before being cleared for reentry.

How Long Does Fumigation Take?

A standard fumigation for Drywood Termites takes 3 days. Fumigations for Beetles or Bedbugs can take a longer time, depending on how much gas is used.

The Fumigation Process

Fumigation is the best way to treat dry wood termites as it eliminates them throughout the entire structure.  A Fumigation begins with the home or structure being covered with tarps and sealed.  Gas fumigant is then pumped into the tented structure. The gas is inorganic and will not react with anything in the structure or leave any residue on anything.  This means that you do not need to clean or wash anything upon reentry. The gas is a small molecule and has the ability to penetrate all wood in the structure.  When the gas has been held within the structure for long enough, the technicians will open special vents that use fans to suck all of the gas out of the structure. After this aeration process, technicians will remove the tent.  They then will inspect all rooms with a spectrometer that can detect the gas to ensure it is safe for the occupants to return.  Once all of this is completed, you will be allowed to re-enter.

How to Prepare for Fumigation

Make sure you have alternate lodging.

Remove all plants and pets (including fish), from the structure.

Open all the doors between rooms, this allows the fumigant to pass through every space.

Seal food items & anything consumable, including pet food, medicine & dental products in special fumigation bags that are provided. These items can be moved off-site as well.

Your professional fumigator will make sure all necessary items are properly contained.

Rake back mulch or gravel at least a foot from your foundation.

Leave any locked areas unlocked (including cars)

Leave keys for the fumigator.
